Project introduction

*This project is for foreign participants.

This is a volunteer education project to teach English and foreign languages to children in a public elementary school in a small island village in Korea.Participants will share their language, culture, and experiences with the children while teaching and doing various activities. Help expand the children's world in a small island village and experience the real everyday life of Korea that is hard to find in Seoul.

1. Experience Korea's education culture that has made its progress.
Korea has always seen education as a crucial foundation for personal and social growth. Even during rapid industrialization and economic growth, schools played a central role in helping people learn new knowledge and skills. You can experience the everyday life of students learning and growing as a native teacher in a Korean public elementary school. You will see how Korean education operates in practice through regular classes, reading activities, student self-governance, hands-on education, and the careful care unique to small schools. Understand the Korean education culture and the values of education by creating classes and engaging in various educational activities with the children.

2. Be the foreigner closest to the children.

Children growing up in the island village rarely get to meet and talk to foreign people. Through this project, participants become the closest foreign friend and teacher to the children.During regular interactions where you play and talk together, the children will naturally learn that there are different languages, cultures, and ways of life in the world, and they will reduce their fear of foreign languages.Your small interest and warm encouragement will instill confidence in the children and provide them with a lasting gift that inspires them to dream of a bigger world.

3. Experience the real daily life of Korea and living Korean.
This project takes place on Wonsando, located on the west coast of Korea. You will live in an environment rich with a small school, fishing village, and the sea, allowing you to closely experience local Korean culture. You will greet village residents, share meals, and participate in small seasonal events, living not as a tourist but as a neighbor in the village. While teaching classes and talking with teachers, you will naturally learn Korean while living your daily life with the villagers. You can experience the everyday life, warmth, and communal culture of Koreans that can’t be seen in tourist spots.Live in the school and village, practice using Korean, and learn the language and culture through communication with local people.

4. Give them a language they will remember longer than a textbook.
Children learn languages quickly and remember them for a long time through enjoyable experiences. Through games, songs, and drawing together, they will realize that foreign languages are tools for communicating with people.Participants can plan various activities to let the children enjoy learning English by using their own language and culture.Help children see foreign languages not as subjects for tests but as fun languages that connect them to new friends, cultures, and a wider world. Your time with the children will naturally build your teaching and communication skills and expand their global understanding of different cultures.

Project activities

This project is a volunteer program where a native teacher works in a small elementary school on Wonsando Island in Boryeong City. The teacher introduces children to foreign languages and various cultures from around the world. Participants conduct classes and play using English or their native language and communicate naturally with the kids.

■ Main Activities

1. Planning and running foreign language classes:
Using English or the participant's native language, we conduct various activities like conversation, games, songs, and crafts that suit the children's level. We create a fun learning environment to help kids engage naturally with a foreign language.

2. Introducing global cultures:
Participants introduce their country, culture, food, traditions, holidays, and school life to the children. This helps broaden the kids' view of the world and develop an international perspective through learning and discussing different cultures.

3. Creating educational content:
We create and use a variety of educational materials for classes, like games, flashcards, quizzes, and craft activities. Participants can freely plan classes that are enjoyable for the kids.

4. Activities with the kids:
Participants engage with the kids during breaks, lunch, and school events, blending in naturally. They can create joyful and warm memories with the kids as friends and mentors.
